The way magnetostatic headphones work is that a thin foil covered with a conductive film vibrates between mutually repelling magnets. When a music signal is sent through the conductors, the foil begins to move between the magnets. Compared to conventional headphones, the foil is much lighter, which allows for particularly subtle nuances in the sound. At the same time, however, the vibrating surface is larger than in typical dynamic drivers, which allows for a particularly deep and powerful presentation in the bass range.

One disadvantage of this principle, however, is that the design requires many magnets and is in principle heavier than conventional headphones. It also requires more input power than most conventional headphones. Nevertheless, there is an ever-growing group of lovers of magnetostatic headphones who are thrilled by their convincing sound.
